Getting started
When and where can I get Articlette?
Articlette is coming soon to the App Store for iPhone and iPad (iOS 17 or later). The app itself runs in French, English, Dutch, German, Spanish, and Portuguese.
What will it cost?
Articlette will be free to download. Unlimited games and the full rule list will be part of an optional Premium upgrade; exact prices will be announced at launch. What's already certain: there are no ads and no account to create.
How does the training work?
You play short games of ten nouns. For each noun you tap the article — le or la — and get instant feedback: the correct article is always shown, and for many nouns a short rule hint explains why. A spaced-repetition engine then decides when each noun comes back.
Playing a game
How does scoring work?
Every correct answer is worth ten points, so a perfect ten-noun game scores 100. There's no timer and no penalty — the app records how long a game took, but never rushes you.
What happens when I answer wrong?
You immediately see the correct article with the noun — often with a short hint of the rule behind it. The noun also drops back to the start of the spaced-repetition ladder, so it will return soon in later games.
What do the difficulty levels do?
There are three levels — beginner, intermediate, and advanced — covering over 200 everyday nouns in total. Levels are cumulative: a higher level plays all easier nouns too, and the advanced level adds the famous exceptions to the rules. You can switch levels anytime in Settings.
Why are there no words like l'eau or l'école?
On purpose. Before a vowel, le and la both shrink to l' — so the article would hide exactly what the app teaches. Articlette only trains nouns where you actually have to choose between le and la.
I'm still learning French — will I understand the nouns?
Yes. While you play, every noun shows its meaning in the language your device is set to: English, Dutch, German, Spanish, or Portuguese — or French itself.
Patterns & progress
Does the app teach rules, or only drill?
Both. The Patterns tab explains thirteen ending rules with example words — for instance, nouns ending in -age or -ment are le, and nouns ending in -tion, -té or -ette are la. Learn one rule and a whole family of words falls into place.
What about the exceptions — la page, le silence?
They're in the app. Each rule lists its best-known exceptions (la page and la plage for -age, le silence for -ence, le squelette for -ette), and the exceptions themselves appear as advanced nouns, so you train them instead of being surprised by them.
How does the spaced repetition work?
Each noun climbs a five-step Leitner ladder. A correct answer moves it up; a wrong answer sends it back to the start. After four correct answers in a row a noun counts as mastered — and it still reappears occasionally, so it stays fresh.
How does the day streak work?
Answer at least one question on a day and that day counts. Practice on consecutive days and the streak grows; skip a day and it starts over.
Scores & sharing
What do my stats show?
The Scores tab shows your day streak, how many nouns you're learning and have mastered, your best game score, and your overall accuracy.
How do I share my scores?
Use the share button on the Scores tab and send the invitation through the iOS share sheet — Messages, WhatsApp, mail, or a copied link. Sharing runs through your own iCloud account, and scoreboards that friends share with you appear in the same tab.
What can people I share with see?
Your shared scoreboard is strictly read-only: they see your scores and the nouns of each game — including which article was chosen — but they can never change anything, and they see nothing else. Keep in mind that anyone who has the invitation link can view the scoreboard.
Can I stop sharing?
Yes. Remove an individual person with a swipe, or stop sharing entirely to withdraw the whole scoreboard. Your own scores stay safely on your device.
Privacy & sync
Does my progress sync between my iPhone and iPad?
Finished games and your scoreboard sync through your own iCloud. Per-noun learning progress and your day streak are stored per device, so those don't transfer between devices.
Do I need an account?
No. There's nothing to sign up for. The only thing you can enter is an optional display name, shown to friends who follow your scores.
What data does the app collect?
Very little. Articlette contains no ads and never asks for your name or e-mail. It sends anonymous usage events (such as "game completed" with the score) to PostHog, hosted in the EU, under a random installation ID, and Premium purchases run through Apple and RevenueCat, which only receives the receipt. Your games and scores sync through your own iCloud; we store nothing on our own servers.
